Farewell to Roberta Flack (February 10, 1937 – February 24, 2025)

Though they never recorded together, Charles Mingus and Roberta Flack were labelmates at Atlantic Records for much of the 1970s. It was during this period that the above photograph of the pair was taken, presumably at a record company event.

In June 2023, Artists in Motion and Alchemy Ballet Academy presented “A Celebration of Dance!” at George Mason University’s Harris Theater, featuring choreography set to Roberta Flack and Charles Mingus songs. The careers of both artists were tragically cut short by ALS, and proceeds from the event benefited the ALS Association’s quest to find a cure and support those affected by the disease.
