Farewell President Jimmy Carter, friend to musicians!

Charles Mingus’ final public appearance took place on June 18, 1978 when he was invited to participate in the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Newport Jazz Festival that took place on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C., organized by President Jimmy Carter’s office and George Wein, the founder of the Newport Jazz Festival.

By 1978, Mingus was unable to walk or perform due to ALS, but appeared on the event program and received a standing ovation in recognition of his achievements as a bassist, composer, and leader. In an iconic photograph, President Carter can be seen embracing Mingus, as Mingus weeps. This acknowledgement by Carter’s White House marked a new level of recognition for jazz, and for the vital contributions made by Black musicians to the whole of American music.

Narrator: “An ailing Charles Mingus was visibly overcome with Presidential praise…. Dizzy Gillespie was there, too!”
